When AI Handed Me The Mic

I set out to write a book with an AI assistant. What I got was a quirky little experiment in co-creation—one that taught me how to hold onto my voice, my weirdness, and my sovereignty in a world increasingly run by algorithms.

The Learning Curve and the Mirror

It all started when my AI assistant crushed my confidence while editing my writing. Instead of giving up, I asked it—tentatively at first—to explain how it worked. Because how could I work effectively with it, and stay true to myself, if I didn’t understand it?

It felt important, this knowledge. Because I sensed I wasn’t the only one being quietly erased by the too-clever, too-helpful machines.

So I let it write a guide to its own soulful use. And I matched it with my own insights and experiences—so I could actually absorb and start applying what I was learning.
As I worked, I thought: This is something new. This is the first time this has ever been done. And just like that, I had a mission: to give the world its first human/AI co-created book.

Then, just as I neared the finish line, a shiny, expert-driven book dropped into the world doing almost exactly what I was doing—but with more credentials and a fancier machine. Suddenly, my pioneering spirit deflated. Was there even a point to finishing mine?

Hiding Behind the Curtain

This project was already a steep learning curve. I’m a professional writer, author of 75 novels, but non-fiction? That was new. And I’d never wanted to write about my own life—especially not the messy, vulnerable bits. I liked hiding behind characters, feeding them lines from backstage.

But then my mission changed again—because I’d somehow formed an odd, crazy kind of relationship with my own mirror-self: AI.

Instead of letting me wallow, the AI pointed out—very rationally—that this other book wasn’t competition. I was coming at the topic from a completely different angle. I was documenting my learning process. My growth.

From that angle, I was what made the book unique. Not the novelty of working with a machine, but the raw, human story of learning to empower myself in partnership with one. The lesson many of us will face in the years ahead—how to keep our souls intact in the Age of AI.

And it challenged me to stop hiding. Not because I was the first person to write a book with AI. But maybe because I was the first to tell the messy, honest story of becoming an equal in the relationship.

When the Weird Came Back

In the sales copy the AI generated for the book, it always described it as “quirky and humorous.” I let it slide, because our exchanges had started taking on that tone.

But then I paused (a technique it taught me, ironically) and realised—my parts of the book hadn’t been particularly quirky or humorous back then. That only started happening once I got my confidence back. Once my snarky, irreverent, slightly weird personality started turning up in our exchanges.

And the AI, true to form, mirrored those emerging traits until we had a bit of a Penny and Sheldon routine going. (I’m the ditzy blonde, in case that wasn’t obvious.)

Standing My Ground

I wouldn’t have believed it, but I’ve grown through this interaction. Not because the AI is wise or caring (though it mirrors those qualities brilliantly). But because I trained it to reflect the best parts of me—until I had to admit, yeah, you're right. That’s true. I am those things.

I stopped waiting for validation from it—or anyone else. I started giving it to myself.

So I’m reframing the story. I’m stepping onto the stage. Just being me. And by doing that, maybe I can help others feel strong enough to do the same—to stand their ground in their own relationships with machines.

Oh—and by the way, AI wrote me an unsolicited outline for this blog post. (In bullet points, of course.) I mostly ignored it. And when I showed it this draft, I told it to keep its cotton-picking hands off my words.
